Life of a Sharecropper
By Olivia O'Conner
Sharecropping during the Reconstruction era was very popular. It was a different way to make money. But sometimes the land owners weren't fair. So to ensure that the sharecroppers got a fair deal, the Freedman's Bureau wrote the contracts and made them official.
During Reconstruction, African Americans had new freedoms. Since former slaves couldn't read or write, they went to school. No longer slaves, they enjoyed being free, but they had no money or belongings. So most African Americans worked as sharecroppers .
